Sponsoring daily meal for children at HGSC
Donate Options | Opportunities for Volunteers | Click here for details

HGSC, Hermann Gmeiner Social Center is a day-care center for street children of Pune. This center, located near platform No.1 of Pune's Shivajinagar Railway Station, has been "home" to about 70 children since 1996. This day-care center is where they get a chance to change their lives from being undisciplined, dirty, malnourished children addicted to smoking, drinking, drugs and sniffing glue to appease hunger. This is where they are given a complete meal for lunch everyday and provided with basic hygiene and care, and they are also sent to school, provided with school uniforms, books, medical checkup, treatment, immunization, and so on. We have started sponsoring the meals at the HGSC from August 1, 2004 and plan to continue supporting the meal for the entire year. The project is thus an ongoing project.

Rain water harvesting
Donate Options | Opportunities for Volunteers | Click here for details

Post independence and in recent times the more and more peoples started depending on surface water (primarily rivers) and ground water for their water needs. The earlier use of rainwater and floodwater declined. And the current situation is

  • The most of India's river basins have degraded and the rivers are polluted.
  • Large dams are the major source of water storage, and canals are the major distributory route. The former have caused large-scale community displacement and ecological havoc. The latter, large-scale degradation of land via soil salinisation.
  • Groundwater resources have been heavily over-used.
Thus water availability, both in terms of quality and quantity, has declined to such an extent that many parts of India, rural and urban, today face a drought-like situation.

When Kasturba Gandhi passed away on 22/2/1944, she was in jail with Mahatma Gandhi at the Agakhan Palace in Pune. In her memory, Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation of the 'Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust' , in 1945. This was an outcome of the spontaneous & generous contributions raised by the people. This institution has followed the code of discipline, observed restraint advocated by Gandhiji and dedicated itself to the noble and creative task of service to the Rural Women and children for the last 56 years.
Saswad is the principal center of the trust in Maharashtra. Located about 32 Kms from Pune, Saswad is a cluster of all activities of the trust, implimented in various degrees. This Maharashtra headquarter of the Trust provides guidance and training to all centers in Maharashtra.

    The Project

In 1982 with the help of Social Welfare Board the Bakery activity was started in the trust under the name “Lakshmi Bakery”.

The Technology and infrastructure is 22 years old and are the main reasons for low operating margins and sometime the operating losses. This Micro finance based initiative for Bakery renovation/technology up gradation was first discussed and through about almost a year back.

In the old technology heat source used is from wood and there is no attractive packaging is used. With the help of old technology and machinery it is not possible for Trust to make new products and sell them effectively in the market. Hence Trust has decided to renovate the Bakery.

The new technology will enable Trust to develop new products like Sandwich, Pizza Base, Sunday Patis, Pastry, and Cream Roles in addition to old products like bread, Bun Pav, Nankhati and Biscuits.

  • The total Expenses for the whole project is Rs. 5, 00,000/-
  • From Trust Deposit - Rs. 1, 00,000/- (This was given to the trust by Mrs. Shobhana Ranade which was awarded to her by Rashtrapati of India)
  • From Trust head office (Indore) as Loan – Rs. 2, 00,000/-
  • Additional required Rs. 2, 00,000/- is the help for which they are dependent on you and us.

The Program of Child Care Assistance, commonly known as the Bal-Sangopan Yojana offers financial assistance for care and maintenance of a child within the family. The assistance is offered to widowed, deserted or single mothers for care of their children or to the foster parents for care of orphaned children. The program helps families below the poverty line and prevents abandonment and institutionalization of children. Shishuadhar implements this program in Pune, Solapur, Latur, Osmanabad and Nasik districts and helps about 350 children spread over these districts. The organization has to raise approximately Rs. 1,00,000/- per year so that children could be cared for, in their own families.

Educational Sponsorship Program was started in 1993 and so far Shishuadhar has offered sponsorship to 175 children. Under this program, financial assistance is given primarily to meet educational needs of the children. Assistance for medical and nutritional needs is also given as per the requirement. Counseling, follow up, personality development camps and family life education sessions are integral parts of the program. Rs. 2,400/- per child per year are required for all these activities. No Government grants are available for this program and the organization has to rely totally on the support from the community. Presently 40 children are being sponsored by Sanvedana.
